Bannister Academy through the eyes of an intern - Femke speaking out
Femke Van Dyck (20) is in her final year of Legal Practice at AP Hogeschool Antwerp. Before she starts a bridging program with the final goal of a Master's degree in Law, she will spend 16 weeks in our Bannister Academy. This Academy is a broad training and education program in which we immerse students in the legal profession and introduce them to the various branches of law we have.
How Femke experienced her first weeks read below!
Femke, explain, how do you feel about the first few weeks?
Femke: "Great! There is an incredibly open and jovial atmosphere here, I like that so much! During my first introductory meeting I was immediately put at ease, no typical cliché questions, no dry conversation, but a sincere and personal acquaintance with an open vision.
When I received the news that I could start I was nervous, but above all very happy. A warm welcome by the whole team made sure that my first day went smoothly, I felt really included in the group from the very first moment.
You know what I found so strange at first? That everyone here greets each other so kindly in the morning, I really didn't expect that (laughs).“
"Not your average law firm" is our baseline.... Can you follow us in that?
Femke: "Yes! Despite working extremely hard, there is a very amusing and relaxed atmosphere here. In the afternoon we have lunch together - at a proper distance, of course - which are super pleasant moments. After work hours we often discuss files in a corona-proof way, and yes... occasionally we can have a drink. I don't see other offices doing that. I think it is all much more formal and dry there."
What does your range of duties consist of?
Femke: "My daily schedule is super varied, I often don't know in advance what the day will bring. I really like that variety, because that way I really get to know all aspects of a law firm. They take into account that you are a student and that you do not yet know how everything works, so making a mistake is not a problem. After all, you are here to learn.”
Finally, why did you choose Bannister?
Femke: "I consciously chose to apply to Bannister Academy because the atmosphere on the website and social media really appealed to me. I also felt that "let's go" - mentality during that very first interview, and then I just knew; this is where I would like to give my best for 16 weeks. Only 12 more weeks to go and I'm looking forward to it so much! Let's go."
